We are pleased to make available to BYUH Information Systems students
and alumni personal web accounts. These are set up for students by
request and in certain classes, including IT240, CIS201, and some IDD
courses. You can keep them after the class is over. There are some
rules.
- To get an account, contact your teacher or one of the
administrators (Scott Mikolyski or Bro Colton or webmaster at
is2.byuh.edu). Most IS faculty can create is2 accounts.
Accounts can be used for school purposes AND for personal
purposes (family website) AND for business *prototyping*
purposes, but NOT for actually conducting business. We
especially encourage you to try out the various features of
cPanel, including making your own blog, mailing lists, email
accounts, etc. The more skills and experience you have, the more
employable and useful you become, and the more fun you will have.
Although it is mainly for Computer and Infomation Sciences
students and alumni, we are happy to provide accounts for other
BYUH students of any major, as well as faculty and staff, as
resources permit.
- If something goes wrong with an account (password, bandwidth, no
contact address, etc), we usually notify the owner by email, and
eventually SUSPEND the account to prevent problems. When an
account is suspended, we wait to hear from the owner. If we do
not hear from the owner within a month, we consider the account
to be abandoned and we will probably delete it.
- Email: You must provide an email address for us to contact you as
needed. Make sure it is one that you check regularly. We will
verify it when your account is created, and monthly
thereafter.
- Renewals: Each month we will email you a renewal notice with a
special URL. Just click through on the URL (or cut and paste it
into a browser) to renew for another month. It takes about two
seconds. If you don't renew after seven days, your email address
will be considered invalid and your account will be suspended.
You must maintain a valid contact email address to receive your
renewal notice.
- Maintain a good password. On an ongoing
basis, we run a password cracker to find out if anyone has weak,
easily hackable passwords. If your password is discovered, we
will warn you. If you do not correct it within a few days we
will suspend your account. (Hackers hit this website hundreds of
times per day looking for easy passwords. We don't want to
become a victim.)
- If you exceed your bandwidth quota, we will automatically suspend
your account. The main purpose of this is to identify huge
graphics, possible illegal files (popular downloads), and CGI
program bugs (infinite loops). After reviewing your situation,
we will probably increase your quota. Of course you should not
do anything illegal or improper. We once had to shut down a
student account that had a bunch of copyright-violating music
available for download, and was generating quite a bit of
traffic.
- If YOU notice anything that seems improper, please notify us so
we can look into it and fix it.
- Because of our license agreement, we are not allowed to run an
actual ecommerce website on this web host. You can design one,
and set one up and "play" with it, but when you are ready to do
any actual business, we need to make other arrangements.
- If someday we have to take down the server, we will do our best
to let you know so you can move your stuff. Right now, we expect
we can leave it up pretty much forever, but we'll see.
Thanks! Bro Colton (email:
